Why Pricing Your Work Feels So Difficult — And Why Value Matters More Than Time

One of the hardest things for many founders, consultants, and creatives to feel comfortable with is pricing.

Not because they lack skill or experience, but because pricing often feels personal.

Many of us start by charging based on time or effort. We ask ourselves:

How long did this take?
What feels reasonable to charge?
Will people think this is too much?

But over time, many businesses realise that time isn’t really what people are paying for.

They’re paying for outcomes.

If your work helps someone gain clarity, grow revenue, solve a difficult problem, save time, or move forward with confidence, the value created is often far greater than the hours involved.

This shift — from pricing time to pricing value — can feel uncomfortable at first, especially when credibility is still being built. But the more trust and authority you develop, the easier it becomes for people to recognise the impact of what you offer.

It’s something I’ve been reflecting on recently while learning from people who have built businesses at scale. One pattern shows up repeatedly: positioning, credibility, and pricing are closely connected.

When people understand the value of what you do, pricing conversations become easier.

Like many founders, I’m still learning and refining this balance myself, and it’s a conversation I know many business owners quietly wrestle with.

Perhaps the real question isn’t what our time is worth — but what change or outcome our work helps create.
